Abdominal massage benefits – in the clinic and at home!

Massage is one of the most effective ways to detoxify our organs. Most people get massages because of shoulder or back pain. In doing so we encourage blood flow to the areas of discomfort to nourish and detoxify the area resulting in less discomfort and better tissue health. The benefits of massage are numerous and well documented making it the most popular form of health maintenance, but how often do we massage our abdomen? The abdomen houses the majority of our organs which are arguably the most important in determining our health, yet rarely if ever do we touch our stomach. Not only is massage to the abdomen effective, but it’s incredibly relaxing as well.

  • After each meal, one can start by rubbing the abdomen in a clockwise motion for 5-10 minutes. Our intestines move food up the right side of our body, across and down the left side. By rubbing the stomach in this way after each a meal, we encourage the movement of food and waste through our digestive system. The heat from our hands also creates warmth increasing the rate at which our body intakes the nutrients and eliminates toxins.
  • If suffering from diarrhea, massaging the stomach in the counterclockwise direction will slow movement in the bowels, improving your symptoms and slowing the rate at which food move through your colon.
